ANTIQUITIES OF ROMAN ALGERIA

Algeria’s triumvirate of Roman UNESCO
World Heritage sites ranks amongst the finest in the ancient world,
perhaps even more impressive – and certainly less visited – than
Libya’s Leptis Magna.Tipasa, nestling undisturbed
among palm trees on the shores of the Mediterranean,
once served as an inspiration to Albert Camus.
DJANET AND TADRART
This eight-day tour includes several nights camping under the Saharan stars surrounded by
golden dunes, with visits to cave and rock paintings (from circa 12,000 BC to 100 AD) depicting cattle, giraffes and human beings…
and we’ll also hunt down the “Crying Cow” – a famous rock painting – and set out in search of the “Hedgehog”, a sublime rock formation.
CROCODILES AND GIRAFFES IN THE SAHARA
Algeria’s mountainous Tassili region, bordering Niger to the south, is
distinguished by its towering dunes of sand, its sheer-sided
canyons and its beguiling “forests of rock”. The Tassili – “plateau of the rivers” in Arabic – is
an open-air treasure-trove of more than 15,000 rock carvings and
cave paintings that depict pre-historic crocodiles and cattle,
giraffes and Giraffes.
FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN TO THE SAHARA
This 15 day
programme ranges across Algeria from the Mediterranean to the
northern Sahara. Highlights include casbah of Algiers, the Roman antiquities of Timgad, Djemila and
Tipasa; the M’Zab
Valley, where the walled town of Beni Isguen is normally closed
to foreigners; and El Oued, the Saharan
“town of a thousand domes” where we stay in a palace in the desert.
ALGIERS, ORAN, TIMIMOUN, GHARDAIA, HOGGAR
Our itinerary
starts on the shores of the Mediterranean in Algiers, Tipasa and
Oran before plunging into the Sahara where
Taghit is considered to be one of the most beautiful oases in the
desert and where Assekrem, located in the heart of the Hoggar,
boasts some of most sensational views in the whole of North Africa.
THE DEEP SOUTH: FROM TAMANRASSET TO DJANET
Our tour of
Algeria’s virgin Sahara starts in the desert town of Tamanrasset, deep in the Hoggar region, and ends in
the Tassili, bordering Niger to the
south. A beguiling array of landscapes awaits discovery as we
traverse these remote Saharan expanses on foot and by jeep:
towering dunes of sand, sheer-sided canyons and dense forests of
rock.
ESSENDILENE BY CAMEL
This circuit,
beginning and finishing in Djanet, has been devised to embrace the
Tassili‘s captivating range of Saharan
landscapes, from its’s lofty dunes and sculptured rocks to its
life-giving gueltas (water-holes and small lakes) lined with
pink rose-bays. We will navigate the Tassili – “plateau of the rivers” in Arabic – by
camel, spending six nights under the Saharan stars.
DISCOVER MEDITERRANEAN ALGIERS
Virtually unknown in
the English-speaking world, Algiers is
one of the Mediterranean’s most mesmerising cities, a captivating
mélange of faded French grandeur and neo-Moorish folly
crowned by a legendary casbah. Were “Alger La Blanche” situated on
the northern edge of the Mediterranean, it would be one of Europe’s
most sought after destinations.
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ALBERT CAMUS, SON OF ALGERIA
Our new Albert Camus
tour, designed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the great
philosopher’s birth, includes visits to many of the places
associated with Camus’ life and work, visiting scenes from,
inter alia, l’Etranger, The Plague and The
